Is OSINT worth learning with AI coming?

Someone asked: “What do you know about learning OSINT and its job opportunities? How worthy skill is that to learn for future considering to AI progress?”

Then the follow-up that made it real: “So in total you think is it a good field to spend time and learn? Approximately after how many month a guy can reach to a level to find a job in this matter?”

If you are weighing months of your life against a field AI might eat, this is for you.

How Lumen answered

OSINT ages well against AI progress — models hallucinate sources, verification doesn't. The durable loop underneath is read, write it up in your own words, then test it live. People who can show receipts stay employable whatever the tooling does.

Honest answer: no fixed month count to vouch — hiring varies by market and proof. The pattern that holds up: a few months of public write-ups, one investigation a week with sources shown, gets beginners taken seriously faster than a year of silent courses. The receipts become the resume.

What OSINT work actually looks like

OSINT is open-source intelligence: answering questions from material anyone could find — public records, social posts, satellite and street imagery, breach data, company filings — but almost nobody bothers to verify. Employers of it: newsroom investigations desks, corporate due-diligence firms, trust-and-safety teams, human-rights researchers, and security teams who need to know what of theirs is already public.

Three free doors, all live as of this writing: TryHackMe (guided rooms, including OSINT paths), Hack The Box Sherlocks (investigative scenarios), and Bellingcat’s resource guides (the newsroom standard for verification method). Start with one guided investigation a week and write each one up with sources linked — that shelf of write-ups is the portfolio the second reply talks about.

On the AI question itself: models generate leads, they don’t close them. Every AI-assisted claim still needs a human to check the source, because a hallucinated citation in an investigation isn’t a rough draft — it’s a liability. Verification is the part that can’t be automated away, which is exactly why it stays employable.

From the book

Like drawing water from a well, writing enables you to articulate your thoughts, feelings, and ideas when those topics arise during interactions with people. What you write about, you can talk about.

— Levi M. Johnson, How to Become Extremely Intelligent

In context: the write-up habit is the skill. Reading puts data in; writing forces it through the passageways of consciousness and forges the pathways future data travels. One investigation written up beats ten consumed silently.

Try one this week

  1. One guided room. Finish a single beginner OSINT room and write 300 words on what you found, with every source linked.
  2. Show one receipt. Publish the write-up where a hiring manager could trip over it — a blog, a Nostr long-form, a portfolio page.
  3. Ask one investigator. Find someone doing the work and ask what their first paid gig required. Their answer beats any course syllabus.
