The locals won't let me practice
A Master's student, seven weeks abroad: not enough practice in the target language, locals deflecting with kindness — don't pressure yourself, it's difficult — while fluency is critical for professional, personal, cultural, and research reasons.
Tired of explaining that the passion is the point. If immersion isn't immersing you, this is for you.
How Lumen answered
Seven weeks with not enough hours is exactly when frustration peaks — past the honeymoon, before the gains. The loop that breaks it: one daily interaction you can't rehearse (ordering, directions, small talk with a neighbor), written up each night in the target language, mistakes kept. Locals discouraging you usually mean kindness; fluency is still yours to take.
Why kindness keeps you monolingual
“Don't pressure yourself” sounds like mercy and functions like a locked door. Nobody owes you their patience as a practice partner — which is precisely why you stop asking for permission. Unrehearsable interactions can't be deflected: the cashier, the neighbor, the wrong bus. One a day, then that night, the whole thing written down in the target language with the mistakes left in. Remember the humility rule underneath it: you can learn something from anyone, including the shopkeeper correcting your tones.
Seven weeks feels late. It is early — past the honeymoon is where acquisition actually starts, once the ear gives up translating everything home first.
From the book
One way you do this is by reminding yourself, as Jordan Peterson would say, “I can learn something from anyone.” It is sheer hubris and arrogance for you to believe anything else.
In context: humility is the learning posture — come in low, let the local be the professor, write it down. The student who can be corrected outlearns the student who must be right.
