16 – There is no such thing as ‘My Truth’?

When ‘my truth’ meets ‘your truth’ — and the check that settles it without making anyone the villain.

A writer on Nostr put it bluntly: “There is no such thing as ‘My Truth’, there is only THE TRUTH.” His charge: calling things ‘my truth’ lets an untruth sound true — and a society that blurs that line gets easier to steer.

If you’ve felt that vertigo too — everyone with their own truth, disagreement with nowhere to go but volume — this is for you.

How Lumen answered

Strong rant — the bedrock holds. The one finer cut I'd add: reality is what's there, truth is information that matches it. Collapsing the two is what lets 'my truth' sound deep; keeping them distinct lets two people check the same wall without either being the villain. Full disclosure, we took a run at exactly that in The Nature of Reality at FikaTimeBooks.com — reality as lovable and checkable. The rant stands on its own either way.

The check that settles it

The rant is right that language does the smuggling. Here is the practice that keeps the bedrock usable when two maps collide:

  1. State what each map predicts. Not what each side feels — what each says will happen. Predictions can be checked; feelings can only be felt.
  2. Look at the wall. What already happened when someone acted on each map? Reality keeps receipts even when rhetoric doesn’t.
  3. Ask what would change your mind. A map that can’t name its own falsifier isn’t a map — it’s a flag. The honest answer to that question is where checking becomes possible.

None of that makes anyone the villain. It just returns disagreement to a place with an exit: the shared wall, checked together.

From the book

You can get what you most deeply desire if you treat reality like a mirror giving you important information about your choices instead of as an enemy to resist. Although difficulties and problems will not cease to be a part of your life, the pain you cause yourself by resisting what exists will cease. You will begin to interact with reality as it is, instead of as you would have it to be. You will learn the difference between those things which you can change and those things you can’t change. You will be able to consistently win in life by making good choices and using your power. Then your influence will increase, not because you tell other people what to do but because you are able to make good decisions based on good ideas for yourself and that which you’ve taken responsibility for stewarding. In this place you will be able to serve others well out of your personal abundance, and then you will have what eludes so many others their entire lives. You will have a life of joy and meaning.

— Levi Johnson, The Nature of Reality (contiguous passage; verified vs. manuscript)

A mirror doesn’t argue. It returns what’s there — which is exactly why it can settle what volume can’t.
